The Jewish holiday calendar is rich with stories, celebrations, and remembrance, and every Jewish holiday has a special meaning. Food plays a large role in almost every Jewish holiday and tradition, and Best’s Kosher is proud of its place at the holiday table.
Purim
Purim celebrates the story of Esther, and the Biblical Book of Esther is usually read aloud during the holiday of Purim. This boisterous holiday celebrates survival and salvation, and features feasts, noisemakers, and even plays. Best’s Kosher franks and knockwurst are a favorite on Purim.
Passover
Passover is a solemn time during which the Exodus from Egypt is remembered and retold. Special food requirements prevail during this important holiday season, and must bear the phrase “kosher for Passover.” Best’s Kosher salami, kishka and chopped liver are popular choices during Passover. The first two days and the last two days of this eight-day holiday are observed as holy days.
Shavuoth
Shavuoth marks the day the Torah was given to the Jewish people at Mt. Sinai. It is also connected to the grain harvest in Israel. It is a joyous holiday, and dairy products are in great demand.
Rosh Hashanah
This is the Jewish New Year, and there is again an emphasis on feasting and joyous celebration. Best’s Kosher kishka and chopped liver are often served with rib roasts, brisket, rib eye, and turkey.
Yom Kippur
The most sacred Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement. Though fasting is customary on Yom Kippur, it is both preceded and followed by a feast.
Succoth and Sh’mini Atseres
This holiday celebrates the fall harvest and commemorates the 40 years ancient Israelites spent wandering the desert following the Exodus from Egypt. Best’s Kosher deli meats are popular during this holiday. Sh’mini Atseres is the eighth and final day of Succoth.
Simchath Torah
Simcath Torah celebrates the completion of the reading of the Holy Scriptures, and the commencement of the re-reading. Best’s Kosher sliced meats and kishka are often served alongside roasts and poultry.
Chanukah
This is the Feasts of Lights, celebrating the Maccabees driving their enemies from the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. This is a joyous, celebratory holiday when Best’s Kosher franks and salami are often enjoyed.
